Summary-based-results Mendelian Randomisation (SMR) is a method that applies the principles of Mendelian Randomisation (MR) to identify genes whose expression levels are associated with a complex trait or disease because of pleiotropy or causality using summary data from GWAS and eQTL studies ( Zhu et al. 2016 Nature Genetics). This method can be used to prioritise candidate causal genes for complex traits or diseases at the GWAS loci for follow-up functional studies. The method has been implemented in a user-friendly software tool, which is freely available at cnsgenomics.com/software/smr/.
